The Atikokan Amateur Radio Club was very active during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s during the construction of Ontario Hydro’s Atikokan Thermal Generating Station. Once the station was complete, many of Atikokan’s licensed amateurs moved away, and the club entered a lull.

In 2004, the  club was re-vitalized with only two members: VE3AKX, Vic and newly-licensed VE3FYN, Warren.

Using some funds from the Atikokan Economic Development Office’s Local Initiatives Grant, and some assistance from VA3EXT Scott, from Dryden, the club re-built repeater VE3RIB, and re-located it to its current home atop Tower Hill just south of town.

Since then, the club has licensed about a dozen new hams, mostly high school students, and built several new stations. The club has participated in Field Day, provided communications at local events, and hosted the Fourth Atikokan Scouts at Jamboree on the Air for several years running.

Meetings

Meetings are held the first Sunday of each month at 7:30, typically at the club station VE3YIB located at the Atikokan Airport.
